Email recovery and SMS recovery are password reset recovery options. These options are a convenient way to get back into your account if you’re locked out.
These recovery options won’t restore your account data (like emails, calendars, contacts, files, passwords). To avoid losing access to your data after a password reset, make sure you have at least one data recovery option enabled, and ideally your recovery phrase too.

Add or change a recovery email address
- Sign in to account.proton.me and open your account settings.

- Select Recovery from the sidebar and scroll to Password reset options. Select Email verification.

- Enter your recovery email address and click Add and verify.

4. Enter your password to confirm.

- Now you need to verify your email address. You won’t be able to use this recovery option until you do. Click Verify with email.

- A verification code will be sent to your recovery email address. Follow the instructions in the email to verify your recovery email address.

Email recovery is enabled.

If you get locked out of your account, you’ll be able to request a verification code to your recovery email address. That code will allow you to reset your password.
Add or change a recovery phone number
- Sign in to account.proton.me and open your account settings.

- Select Recovery from the sidebar and scroll to Password reset options. Select SMS verification.

- Enter your phone number and click Add and verify.

- Enter your password to confirm.

5. Now you need to verify your phone number. You won’t be able to use this recovery option until you do. Click Verify by SMS.

6. A verification code will be texted to your recovery phone number. Enter the code and click Verify account.

SMS recovery is enabled.

Disable email or SMS recovery
- Sign in to account.proton.me and open your account settings.
- Select Recovery from the sidebar and scroll to Password reset options.
- Select Email verification or SMS verification.
- Disable the Allow recovery by email or Allow recovery by phone toggle.
